About this course

This 8-module course provides a historical perspective on antimicrobial resistance (AMR), terminology descriptors, understanding the use of antibiotics in food production systems, categories of antibiotics of importance to human and animal health, mechanisms of resistance and its spread, and the principles and challenges of tackling AMR from a global perspective.

The course will apply a multidisciplinary ‘One Health’ approach, ensuring that the wellbeing of people, animals and the environment are considered throughout.

WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR

This online course is designed for professionals working in the food industry and aims to impart clarity and understanding on the global complexities of antimicrobial resistance and antibiotic use in food-animals.

COURSE CONTENT

The course covers the critical aspects of antibiotic stewardship, including the development of robust policies to combat antibiotic resistance:

  1. Introduction: Setting the Scene
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has been described as one of the greatest challenges facing humanity. But what is it and how does it arise?

  2. All About Antibiotics
Antibiotics have transformed human and animal health, by saving millions of lives and alleviating suffering. But how do antibiotics work?

  3. The Emergence and Spread of AMR
Bacteria, some carrying antibiotic resistance traits, can spread between human populations, animals and the environment. In our globalised society, small pockets of infectious disease can quickly become global epidemics.

  4. Antibiotic Policy Masterclass
Antibiotic stewardship, the approach to using antibiotics responsibly in people and animals, is fundamental to reducing the risk of antibiotic resistance and tackling this global threat to public health.

  5. Antibiotic Use and Animal Welfare
Antibiotics have transformed human and animal health, by saving millions of lives and alleviating suffering. But what are the challenges of antibiotic use in food-producing animals?

  6. Measuring Antimicrobial Usage (AMU) in Food Supply Chains
Understanding our current use of antibiotics in food animal production is vital if we are to implement effective antibiotic stewardship in agriculture and aquaculture.

  7. A Global Perspective on AMR
It is essential that we act at local and regional level to drive responsible use of medicines in the food supply chains we work in, but what is being done at national and international level to unite our efforts?

  8. Agents of Change
The scale and complexity of the AMR problem can sometimes feel overwhelming. So what can you do in your current role to drive change? How can you engage stakeholders within your supply chains to drive changes in behaviour? And how can you effectively communicate both within your organisation and to the public regarding this issue and your company's response?
